RTL8127 Finally Works on Mac: Third-Party Open-Source Driver Released

In one sentence: The 1.79W RTL8127 10GbE chip previously could not be used on Mac. On September 14, 2026, the open-source project RTL812xLucy added macOS driver support — third-party, open source, signed and notarized.

What Happened?
On September 14, 2026, the open-source project RTL812xLucy released v1.1.2-rtl8127.beta2, adding a 10GbE driver for Realtek RTL8127 / RTL8127ATF on Apple Silicon Macs.
First, one thing needs to be clarified: Macs are not lacking 10GbE. Apple offers built-in 10GbE as an option, and Thunderbolt docks can also provide 10GbE. The difference is that both options fall into a different price range.
What has been missing is this affordable, low-power Realtek solution.
RTL8127 has already been supported on Windows and Linux for some time. macOS was the exception — there was no driver and no official port.
The LEKUO DTB3F11 is built around this exact chip.
The key point is not simply that "a driver is now available." More importantly, the installation process is relatively clean:
- It is a DriverKit extension, signed and notarized by Apple, rather than an unsigned kext that requires the system to load it with reduced security.
- No Recovery Mode, no "Reduced Security," and no csrutil commands are required.
- Install the .pkg, approve the extension once in System Settings, and then plug in the adapter.
What Can the Current Version Do?
Version v1.1.2-rtl8127.beta2 (installer version 0.2.27) was tested on an M5 Mac running macOS 26.6, using a Thunderbolt enclosure with a DAC connected to a 10GbE switch, with Linux on the other end.
Single-stream performance reaches around 9.4–9.9 Gbit/s, equivalent to 94%–99% of 10GbE line rate.
With jumbo frames enabled, 8 concurrent streams can also reach around 9.7 Gbit/s.
The current driver also supports:
- DHCP
- IPv4 / IPv6
- Bonjour multicast discovery
- TCP segmentation offload for IPv4 / IPv6
- Checksum offload
- Jumbo frames, up to MTU 9000
Three limitations worth stating clearly
- The driver is still in beta. It is maintained by an independent developer. It is not provided by Apple, Realtek, or LEKUO. The project is free and open source.
- At MTU 1500, 8 or more concurrent TCP streams are limited to around 4.5 Gbit/s. This is related to the per-packet overhead of the DriverKit path. Switching to MTU 9000 removes this limitation in the test.
- Wake-on-LAN (WoL) is not available under macOS. The adapter itself supports WoL, and it can be used under Windows / Linux.
Who Can Benefit From This?
Mac users who want to use RTL8127
The advantages of RTL8127 are its low cost, 1.79W power consumption, and fanless design. Previously, Mac users simply could not use this chip.
Now, a Thunderbolt-connected setup can provide 10GbE access to shared storage, while the fanless design means no additional noise source for editing studios or recording environments.
NAS users
If the Mac is the client and the NAS is the server, this completes the last part of the connection.
With SFP+ and a DAC cable, you get a short-distance, low-cost, low-latency connection.
Small studios
One adapter can now cover Windows, Linux, and macOS, making it easier to standardize spare hardware and cabling.
Network engineers and developers
A USB4 10GbE adapter can be carried around for link testing, packet capture, and reproducing customer network topologies, without opening up a desktop PC.
